"...you can call her Queen B..."

So I was lucky enough to get tickets to see Beyonce in her sell-out Mrs Carter show the other evening and we most definitely were not disappointed! In my opinion, there is no other performer still touring who has the ability to entertain an audience or own the stage as Beyonce does. She literally gives her fans 100% every time because she says that is what her fans give her in return - the dance numbers were incredible! Ever since I have learnt about Web 2.0 features I find myself thinking about their influence on the professional aspect of this course, and it led me to think of the two male dancers, known as 'Les Twins' who tour with Beyonce and have performed alongside other big industry names. This pair of brothers from France were discovered and made a name for themselves after a video they uploaded of their dancing went viral. Yet another example I have come across whilst blogging that highlights the importance of these tools, how people rely on them for self-promotion and the power of the 'consumer' in the sharing aspect that Web 2.0 allows for.

Here is a link of 'Les Twins' performing with Beyonce at Glastonbury festival. Hope you enjoy it!

  1. Hi Pip
This is a really great point. It is great how you are taking the ideas introduced in the handbook and see how they work in real-world situations within your profession. What does it tell you about what you are learning out there in the field? Do you feel you have to experience something like seeing the show to get you thinking about how people manage to achieve the things they achieve. I mean maybe it is one thing to read about theory on social media but it is another to see the result of people using it. What do you think?

    1. Hi Adesola,
It was a very strange moment I must admit, when I started thinking about my University work during a Beyonce concert! I think it shows how much this profession has evolved through the use of modern technologies and that it will continue to do so. We as professionals need to keep up the self-promotion but we are seeing people doing this in more and more creative ways.More and more often now, I am starting to come across examples of the work we have been looking at but in real life situations. I feel that it doesn't necessarily take the experience of seeing something to get me thinking about it, but as it is still all fairly new, the 'seeing' of it certainly helped. But as I sit here and type this now I can start to think of plenty of other examples that this could apply to. It was really great to see the result of where the two boys had got to from uploading their video as opposed to just merely reading about them on the internet or watching YouTube videos of them as I had done before seeing the concert.

  2. Hi Pip,
Firstly I am of course very jealous, it must have been fabulous. I also wrote about people using Web 2.0 to propel their careers, it's fantastic what you can do if you use the web in the right way. Self promotion is a lot easier when people have an outlet that connects to so many people in the way Web 2.0 does, don't you think? x

    1. Hi Della!
It was incredible! Self-promotion is easy enough if the professionals are familiar with the Web 2.0 tools yes, I personally don't think that self-promotion was covered enough on my Musical Theatre course before we graduated, and others out there are becoming more and more creative. i mean, take the two boys as an example. They may have found themselves queuing around the block for an open audition for the chance to dance for Beyonce amongst hundreds of others, but their home-made video propelled them right under her nose so they avoided all of that! With self-promotion, I think professionals need to take extra caution to maintain their 'image' and professionalism and not let the line between their working and social lives blur.

  3. Yes social media is one of the biggest marketing tools for performance! Unpack this and look at how events organisations think about their media and celebrity endorsements in terms of advertising - but what about the talent? what does Beyonce represent - what are her creative themes - Mrs. Carter? Are there ways you can use the ideas - themes? I remember long ago a when my contemporary art lecturer introduced Mick Jagger as the modern Dionysus - heres a similar themed site https://sites.google.com/site/rebirthed1/introduction
What goddess would Beyonce be? Does she (with her production managers, stylists, choreographers etc.) and others in the industry use cultural reincarnations to develop their style?
